Hi,

I have GST (a tax) setup for my events. So far it has worked fine until yesterday.

I had a client who tried to pay two times through PayPal Pro with a card that I’m not set up for with PayPal Pro.

On his third attempt, he used a proper card type but ended up having the tax, not calculated on just the event amount, but on the amount + tax. The event costs $300 and with tax (5%) it should have come to $315. Instead the client was charged as if $315 were the sub-total and ended up paying tax on that amount for a total of $330.75.

Obviously a big problem.

Hi Paul,

What card did he use?

I assume this issue has only occurred this once and all other transactions have gone through OK?

Which version of EE 4 are you using please?

I don’t know what card he used. He didn’t report the proglem, I noticed it and haven’t been able to speak to him yet.

When I look at the transaction details, on the failed transactions, this is the message from the Gateway:

“Your processor is unable to process the Card Type in the currency requested. Please try another card type.”

At the time, I believe I was using the current version of the day….4.1.5.reg

Hi Paul,

I’m having some trouble with reproducing this. I think I have the ticket set up the way you do, but maybe I don’t. Are you using the tax feature (where you check a box labeled “This ticket is taxable”) when you set up the ticket?

I ran 3 declined transactions then on the same registration did an accepted transaction and the total came out to be what it was supposed to.

If you can give us some more details about how the tax is set up that may help narrow down the issue.

Yes, it is set up as “This ticket is taxable” and it works for every other transaction except this particular one.

I will tell you that there were several hours (maybe 12+) that lapsed between the initial tries and when the transaction went through. This tells me that the client might have come back to pay again through the email interface link and maybe that’s part of the issue?

Hi Paul,

Can you forward a copy of the invoice that was sent to the customer to support@eventespresso.com so we can take a look?

I just emailed you the PDF

The problem just happened again. Version 4.1.7.reg.

No declined transactions this time (that I can see from the transaction history).

Straight up transaction with tax being charged on the total plus tax.

Please fix ASAP. This is causing me serious issues.

Your login credentials I previously set up for you are still active.

The transaction in question (this last one) is for a Wedding Photography class.

The one commonality between the two transactions is that they were paid with PayPal Standard (as opposed to Pro). Hopefully that helps a bit.

I have my system set up so that clients can pay by credit card (via PayPal Pro), or PayPal (PayPal Standard). It seems the problem is comming from PayPal Standard.

Hi Paul,

Since you’re only having the issue in PayPal Standard, that’s likely a tax setting you have in your PayPal account. You’ll need to use a PayPal account that has no taxes set up if you set taxes set in Event Espresso.

I do have a tax set up in PayPal Standard, as I require that when I invoice a client.

Why can’t EventEspresso have an option to not charge tax on a specific gateway if you can’t handle that PayPal is also going to charge tax?

Seems like a kludge all around in this regard.

Hi Paul,

There’s no reason it can’t, and the option will be added, but it hasn’t been added yet.
