I’m trying to install the core plug-in for the very first time… while it would upload and install, it will not activate. I’m getting a “fatal error”

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /*redacted*/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/core/EE_System.core.php on line 161

I’m sure that there’s something simple here that’s gone wrong that I’m just not familiar with.

HELP!!

Hi there Ian,

Would you happen to be using Bluehost? We had another report last week and we saw that a member was using an old version of PHP:

https://eventespresso.com/topic/cant-activate-4-8-13-p-parse-error-syntax-failed-wp-4-3-1/

The web host updated their site to a current version of PHP and the issue was resolved.

I’m using JustHost as a web host.

Been on with their technical support since your response Lorenzo…

I was in fact on an older PHP version… they have now updated me to PHP 5.4 (Single php.ini)… however the same error persists and will not allow me to activate the plug-in.

JustHost walked through a few steps with me including:
– Deactivating ALL other plugins in case there was some weird conflict
– Uninstalling and re-installing the EE4 Plugin
– Deleting the EE4 files from my actual host file manager, and uploading then extracting the EE4 plugin directly within file manager.

None of these have worked.

So they’ve sent me back here for more help…

Did JustHost confirm that they rebooted the server after they made the change in php.ini?

One thing you can check is install this plugin, then go to your WP Dashboard and look in the At a Glance box. It will report the PHP version that your site is running.

Ug… ok same problem as the other thread that was linked… back to JustHost tech support.

Love that plugin. Thanks for that link!!

It’s currently running 5.2.17

Ok… so apparently they agree that my site is running 5.2.17 and not taking the global php settings from my account.

Apparently an edited htaccess file is the culprit, but they won’t tell me how to fix that.

Does anyone know where I can go to get help updating an htaccess file so that my site will run on php version 5.4?

Nevermind… gave up on tech support and did some trial and error.

Adding the code line
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php54s .php

to the top of my htaccess file solved the problem.

As a side note… would that have been so hard for tech support to have told me? LOL

Seems to be working now… thank you all for your assistance… hopefully this thread can help someone else.
