Can you check your customized registration-page-display.php file located in /wp-content/uploads/espresso/templates? Your customizations may not be compatible with PHP 7.2.
With regards to PHP 7.2 being mandatory, may I ask where did you read that? We’d love that to be true, but sadly, WordPress still supports PHP 5.2 and there has been no announcement to drop support for it and other older versions of PHP.
WP Engine has conducted a PHP 7.2 compatibility scan across all of our customers’ active themes and plugins. Environments expected to experience errors on PHP 7.2 will be placed in a later upgrade window, but all sites must be upgraded by March 2019.
I’ll get back to you on the custom php file. Thanks!
What that article is saying is all sites hosted by WPEngine will be getting the update to newer PHP. That is not the same thing as making PHP 7.2 mandatory for WordPress. For example, there are other managed WordPress hosts (like GoDaddy) that are still stuck on PHP 5.6.
