The main EE (4.9.2.p) and EE Calendar (3.2.6.p) plugins are becoming deactivated on our site. There is a notice from EE in the WP Dashboard that says we are running PHP version 5.2.17, but our server (BlueHost) tells me that while our shared server is running 5.2.17, our site is running PHP 5.6, which is what we’ve selected in PHPConfig.

Hello Tom,

PHP 5.2 is end of life and isn’t secure so it can’t be used with Event Espresso 4. Did you recently make any changes to adjust the PHP version through your hosting panel?

If so, it may have reverted to the default which would be the account level version at PHP 5.2.x and that may have triggered the deactivation.

Try re-applying the change to PHP 5.6 and then wait for the confirmation that it was switched. Then go back to your WP dashboard and reactivate Event Espresso 4 along with your add-ons.

If that does not help with resolving the issue, then please reach out to Bluehost support to see if the PHP version needs to be changed elsewhere.

Lorenzo-

I’ve spoken with BlueHost (their phone support is good; online support is horrific). They say the shared server itself is actually running 5.2x, but that our site should be running PHP 5.6. I’m not sure of the technical details of which version of PHP runs on the server vs. the front-end of the web site?

PHP is all about the backend of the site. It sounds like your server is indeed running PHP 5.2, but there is the capability to upgrade it to PHP 5.6. Here’s a link to the Bluehost support document that explains how to upgrade to PHP 5.6:

https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/447

A little note about the information linked to above, the EEr mobile apps work best when the server isn’t handled by FastGCI.

Josh-

I’ve done what that document suggests in the past; it doesn’t change the PHP version running on the back end of the server. Can you explain at all where the PHP used by EE is actually running?

Tom,

PHP is a server side scripting language, and it’s the primary language that powers WordPress and by extension Event Espresso.

This is really something that your host will need to fix. What you can do is insist that they get your site running PHP 5.6. If they can’t do that, we can recommend some other hosting options.
