I was in the last few days of an event when my website just went down. Server company said my database was too large. I’ve done a website recovery but could not install event espresso, it gave me a database error. I had to go to work and when I got back home the site was down again and I can’t access my admin panel. I can use ftp. Is there any way I can get the information from my event espresso registrations? I can’t believe everything is lost. The convention is next week.

Hi there.

How big is the database? Unless you’re using a cheap shared host, this should likely not be an issue. Can you increase your server resources temporarily to get through it and trim old data?

If you have to, you might need to remove old records from the database. Again, depending on your web host that might need to be done locally before it’s uploaded.

I added to my database, its 10,000 now. I thought by recovering my site and then using reactivating the Event Espresso it would work but it didn’t.

I was going to delete old events and such and trim down. I left for work thinking OK, I’ve got access, hooray! Came home and the website is down again. Something must have updated while I was gone.

If I deleted the entire thing and then did a recover, would my registrations still survive?

10,000 what is that number; MB, GB, TB?

No, if you delete everything all the registration data will be gone.

If your site is up and down, then is something adding data to your site? What database tables are large? You are going to need help from your host using some of the strategies I mentioned above.

sorry – 1000 MB
Ok, I will talk to Network Solutions again. Everything was fine until WordPress sent me an email saying they auto updated my version of WordPress. I tried registering people and it gave me an error saying I didn’t have anything in my cart and then it just crashed. I’m so mad I didn’t run a spreadsheet before this happened.

You could ask your host to move your WordPress version back to a lower/earlier version and see if that helps? 1GB database is not a lot. Check your hosting plan.

I can add more. What do you suggest?

Hi there,

Let’s take a step back for a second as right now the above all assumes that the host’s answer of “Server company said my database was too large” is the only thing going on here and in my experience that simply isn’t the case.

Having a large database could indeed bring down the site if you are try access the data but the above doesn’t sound like you are.

If I deleted the entire thing and then did a recover, would my registrations still survive?

Delete what exactly?

All of your event-related data is stored within the database so if you delete the database you lose everything.

What is ‘a recover’?

Everything was fine until WordPress sent me an email saying they auto updated my version of WordPress.

This is why I think there there may b more to this, updating WordPress doesn’t just give you a randomly large DB so why did this all of a sudden become a problem then?

If the database was the problem, as your database was getting larger and larger you would have noticed a slow down on the site getting worse and worse, did you?

I tried registering people and it gave me an error saying I didn’t have anything in my cart and then it just crashed.

Nothing in your event cart can be caused by so many different issues.

What specific errors are you getting on the site now?

The site is down now. The only error code it gave me before it crashed was: A database error has occurred. Turn on WP_DEBUG for more information. A valid Transaction was not found when attempting to update the model entity mapper.

Network Solutions currently has me moving all files to my computer via FTP and suggest that I reinstall WordPress after running a scan on the files.

I’m so frustrated right now I don’t care about the site at this point… I need the info on the people that registered for my convention next weekend. I really don’t want to have to go through all of the group registration details that were emailed to me, but I will if I have to. 🙁

I didn’t notice any lag whatsoever. I never got any warning of my DB getting too large. Looking at all of the backups, it jumped from 1557364 to 3047586 overnight. I did notice an update for EE and WP but chose not to do the updates until after this convention. I have no idea why WP would auto update when I clearly had that option turned off.

Ok, so did you turn on WP_DEBUG to see what the full error was?

Surely they could have just zipped the entire sites root directory for you to download at once (they wouldn’t have needed to give you SSH access to do it if you don’t have it already), using FTP to download every file from a site is probably the most inefficient method of doing it.

I understand your frustration here, but I think it’s important to clarify that right now the issue appears to be with the host.

You should NOT need to go through past emails just to get the data, especially if you have backups from before. Worst case scenario you upload the DB to another ‘new’ site and use Event Espresso to pull the report from there (little bit more to it than just installing the DB and go, but it’s possible to do and quicker than going through emails).

I didn’t notice any lag whatsoever. I never got any warning of my DB getting too large. Looking at all of the backups, it jumped from 1557364 to 3047586 overnight.

What metric is that in? MB? MiB? KB?

Based on your previous reply I’m guessing MB, so it went from ~1.5GB to ~3GB, it’s not normal for the DB to double in size overnight but if that’s the size you currently have, your server needs to be able to load that DB for EE to work.

I did notice an update for EE and WP but chose not to do the updates until after this convention. I have no idea why WP would auto update when I clearly had that option turned off.

I can’t give you an answer to that one, I can tell you that EE has no code within it to allow for ‘forced’ updates and we currently do NOT support WordPress auto updates.

Where are you backups stored? What did you use to create them?

Interesting update: Network Solutions says that when the website was making a scheduled backup, instead of updating files it saved them twice and that’s what doubled the size of my DB and crashed the site. I have already started the process of hand typing in my registrations on the spreadsheet I had downloaded on May 1st. Thank you EE for sending copies of those registrations to my email when they were sent to the registrants. I used to think it was such a redundant thing but I am SO THANKFUL for them now.

You can use the importer to import the attendees you already have in the database.
