I am trying to customize an email template by referencing a custom registration field. I found an answer in your forum that doesn’t appear to work (throws error on save). See video below for details.
Ok, so first to answer your question on why you’re getting the error.
The [PRIMARY_REGISTRANT_ANSWER_*] shortcode is not a valid shortcode in the ATTENDEE_LIST section, if you click on the [/] icon to the right it shows the shortcodes available for each specific section:
Try using just [ANSWER_*] in the same way you are now, does that work?

ATTENDEE_LIST loops over each specific attendee in the group and parses the data relevant to that attended, so using [PRIMARY_REGISTRANT_ANSWER_*] in the way you are trying to meand that each attendee would show only the ‘first’ students name. So say you had 5 tickets in a group and used the above shortcode, the receipt would like the ‘first’ student, 5 time, is that expected?

Sidenote – with the current setup you are using EE will consider the parent to the the ‘registrant’ and whilst yes you can adjust some of the messages etc to show the ‘student’ name the registrant list will list the parent as the attendee.
EE doesn’t have an official method to split out the registrant (student) from the Payee (the parent) but when people do this, we usually advise the use the system questions for the child info and then create custom questions for the parent which when then use in the payment (and often registration) related emails. It basically means that the student shows up as the registrant but the parent receives the emails.
Would that work better for you? I can add some more details on how to do it if so.
