When we complete registration for a free event and then attempt registration for a paid event immediately after, we get a strange bug. Our site shows the thank you page for the free registration instead of allowing us to register and pay for the paid event.

I can’t reproduce this when testing the same steps but it looks like you are getting a cached response.
The thank-you page is returning as cacheable for me: https://monosnap.com/file/tfNfe95eIp8w88FchMEafdJenNjuud
Can you open a ticket with WPEngine and have them confirm that all of the URL’s listed here have been added to the cache exclusion list on your site:
https://eventespresso.com/wiki/setup-wpengine-hosting-event-espresso/
It looks like at least the thank you page has not been added there.
