Clean Talk antispam installed (was not activated) without my knowledge. Did it come with Event Espresso? If yes, is it preferred over Akismet? Does it provide captcha protection for the registration forms? Will it work with Akismet active? Thank you!

No, 100%.
We do not include 3rd party plugins with Event Espresso and I’ll go out on a limb and say we never will do, and even if that decision changed we still would not do so without asking if you want it installed.
Note that we do use 3rd party libraries within Event Espresso, meaning code we didn’t write ourselves such as the DOMPDF library to generate PDF’s but thats normal practice and totally different to installing additional plugins such as the above.
If yes, is it preferred over Akismet? Does it provide captcha protection for the registration forms? Will it work with Akismet active?
Having said the above, I can’t answer these questions as I don’t use it.
Are you sure that plugin was not installed by your host when they created the site? Some hosts include a bundle of plugins when they create the site for you.
