Event Espresso will not install. It says folder link already exists, and the plug-install failed

Hi there,

It sounds like the plugin files might already exist. Have you tried installing the plugin previously? If so, you might need to remove the existing files first.

Thank you for your reply! It does say that the file already exists. When it was downloading, someone in the office may have interrupted the initial download and then when I went back to the computer, it said that the file already existed. My problem now, is that nobody in the office has deeper access to our WordPress site to reach the C Panel or FTP files.

Hi there,

It does sound like the install was interrupted and now WordPress has created the directory, which will then prevent you from installing EE over it again.

Without some kind of access to the server (cPanel or FTP) we can’t help fix this and you would need to contact your host to either get those details or have them remove the directory for you (Personally I’d recommend getting cPanel access as at some point in the future you’ll need it, or FTP if that’s all they have available).

However, let’s first confirm if this is the issue as it looks like you are currently running Event Espresso decaf.

If you go to Dashboard -> Plugins.

In terms of Event Espresso, what do you see listed there?

Where are you downloading Event Espresso currently? Your account page?

When you download the .zip from here does it download as event-espresso-core-reg.zip?

Thank you so much for your reply!

Yes, when I downloaded Event Espresso, it did download as event-espresso-core-reg.zip and then when I tried to upload the plug in, it was interrupted and then when I went to resume, that’s when I received the already existing file message.

Yes, I downloaded it from my Event Espresso account page.

Only Decaf is listed in my plug ins. I downloaded the decaf version after I received the error about the duplicate file. The Decaf version downloaded and installed easily.

This office is in a bit of a disarray and I was thrown into working on the website with very little experience. I will try to find the info for who is hosting our site.

Ok, so that’s the right download (just starting from the beginning so nothing is missed).

Then it does sound like the above likely happened. WordPress extracted the .zip, created the new plugin’s directory and then failed which leaves the empty directory sitting there.

I’ve been there and it’s no fun.

Problem is that pretty much anything you do from this point on requires some kind of file access, even if that’s simply the ability to contact the host and have them do something (which it sounds like you can’t currently). Simply installing a plugin can (and often does) bring down the site and the only way to get it back up is with file access. Right now I know it’s a pain getting the details but it’s worse when the site goes down from a simple plugin you installed and no one has access to fix it or the contact details for the host but all eyes are on you (don’t ask how I know 🙂 ).

Get file access to save your behind when they are needed (they will be eventually), or contact the host and have them remove the event-espresso-core-reg directory from /wp-content/plugins/ and retry the install but I really don’t recommend it if you don’t have access.

Thank you, Tony.

I feel a bit better hearing that you’ve had similar experiences and can commiserate, lol.

With a lot of research and literally digging through credit card statements, I found out who is hosting our site and am now working to try to find someone at that company who can help.
And you’re right about plug-ins messing stuff up. I can’t even do my regular WordPress updates now. Ugh
