I am trying to understand why my client’s event calendar is showing images on all browsers except IE8. The page is: https://kennett-design.com/calendar/ Is there something wrong in the way it is setup? How can I get the calendar images to appear for the IE8 browser? |
Hi Greg, This might be related to the error I’m seeing about the SSL Certificate not matching the domain: You could fix that, or set the calendar page to not be forced to load as https and see if that makes a difference. From what I remember though is the calendar images are only supported in versions of IE of 9 or higher. |

Thanks Josh. Question – which operating system are you using when you produced that SSL Certificate message? Was it with Windows XP by chance? This site SSL certificate is installed correctly, but I have found that WinXP and Vista doesn’t recognize a new method of using SNI (which allows for more than one certificate to be installed on a single IP address) so I’m working on getting a dedicated IP address to use. I’ll let you know if the calendar images are still a problem after that is done. |
It was WinXP. |

Looks like the calendar thumbnail issue is not a SNI or WinXP issue. The site has been upgraded so that it is using a dedicated IP address now but the calendar thumbnails still do not appear. I am running IE 8 with Windows 7. Shouldn’t the calendar thumbnails be visible with this configuration? This is a very common and popular setup. |
Event Espresso does not support out of date browsers.

So based on your quoted policy, IE 8 should still be supported correct? |
Hi Greg, The policy suggests that we support the current and one version behind it. IE10 is the current version of Internet Explorer, and IE9 is one version behind. |

Ah… and I see that just 1 week ago IE 9 even became available to Windows 7. So while obviously many users are still not even off of WinXP (like yourself Josh) it’s not a question of market share that drives support only version numbers. I understand the difficulty of supporting multiple versions, but there is also a large client base that is impacted. Seems like there should also be consideration in terms of market share penetration in the support equation. |
Hi Greg, Where did you get the information about IE9 on Windows7 being released 1 week ago? It’s been available for almost two years. Maybe you meant IE10. I should clarify that I’m on a mac, and I have virtual machines set up for testing IE. I generally use XP to test IE8, and Windows 7 to test IE9. Windows XP users cannot upgrade to IE9, but Vista and Win7 users can, so it sort of made sense to set up my test machines accordingly. The general calendar will display in IE8 in standards view, so someone on Windows XP that is not using a modern browser like Chrome or firefox, (they’re on IE8) will still be able to click on events and register for them from the calendar. It’s a baseline of usable functionality. The user experience on the more modern browsers is enhanced with the thumbnails. |
