Hello Team

I’m at a bit of a loss where to start implementing the best way to scan tickets at our Guildford Beer Festival event and would really appreciate a point in the right direction from you guys please.

We have been using EE3 for 4 years now, and to date, we used the mobile app (on iPad) to scan a few of our tickets. It was just too slow and cumbersome to scan or check more than just a very few.

This year, we are on EE4 and I have big hopes that we can scan all our tickets.
So, your help please.

Our event is held in marquees in a field. The only infrastructure we have is power. So we are reliant on mobile data to reach the server.

What do you think would be better:

1 x pc hotspotting off a mobile phone and then bar code readers attached (how?) to (what?).

or

we use the EE4 mobile app on iPad / phones.

I’m printing both bar code ad the QR code on the tickets, so we have a choice.

Am I right in saying that barcode / reader might be faster because there is less data to read than in a QR code?

We only want to check people in. But it needs to be reasonably instantaneous.

Here’s some info for you:
WordPress Version: 4.9.4

PHP Version: 5.6.31-4+wpengine10

MySQL Version: 5.6.39

Event Espresso Version: 4.9.57.p

WordPress Address (URL): https://guildfordbeerfestival.co.uk

Site address (URL): https://guildfordbeerfestival.co.uk

If you need to know how much memory allocated on the server, please tell me where I can find that info & I’ll get it for you. TY

Thank you for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

Dee

Hi Dee,

The 1 x pc hotspotting off a mobile phone and then bar code readers attached is probably going to be the faster of the two. The bar code readers can be attached by USB, cat5e, or bluetooth. Bluetooth would be the least cumbersome of the three.

One constraint to keep in mind though is if/when people have their ticket on their phone screen instead of being printed out. Most bar code scanners cannot read screens, but some can. There’s some links in the documentation to Amazon which have some recommended bar code scanners:
