From one of the most recent posts about this topic it looked like this featured was scheduled to be added to 4.9 and in the Trello board it is still a planned featured that hasn’t reached In Progress status.
Does it look like it will make it into a release some time in the next year?

Hi Maureen,
The message queue system that was added to 4.9 was the first step to adding automatic email reminders (as they can be added to the queue) so 4.9 needed to be released before we could start looking into adding email reminders.
We use the Trello board to help prioritize our development so as it stands the next feature we will be working on is waiting lists, then recurring events and then automated emails (however the order can change depending on a few internal factors, see here).
I can’t tell when automated emails will be released at this time although we are working as quickly as we can to get those features out the door 🙂
