amount still owed not showing on payment page

hello,
in the back-end view/edit payment screen the amount paid, and the amount owed are showing as correct, however on the front end and in the paypal dialouge it is still asking for the full amount. how can i have these reflect payments already made.
i need to know this asap as, i have a client waiting to pay.
