Hi, we’ve been getting a lot of transactions (one or two a day) where the transaction status is “incomplete” despite “Attendee Information”, “Payment Options” and “Finalize Registration” all being market complete and payment being accepted (IPN’s are working, we don’t have any caching).

Normally I’ve been going through and applying a payment of $0 to force them to update to “Transaction Status: Complete” but now I’ve hit a wall with one, when I applied a manual payment I was told:

“The payment was processed successfully but the amount paid for the transaction was not updated.”

So it’s still incomplete. There’s no special characters in the event or customer name.

Hi there,

I’m assuming as you mentioned IPN’s that the issue is only happening with PayPal Payments?

On the transaction that you receive the above error, is there a Payment that has a status of approved? – http://take.ms/PTl2b

It does now, as we were finally able to apply a manual payment, but at the time of the original post the transaction was blue and said it was “incomplete”.

Even though that’s resolved now, as this is a regular occurrence for us, it’d be good to work out why we keep getting these “incomplete” fully paid transactions on otherwise fully finished registrations. It’s not really a huge issue, but it would just make life a bit easier to not have to keep going back through the last day’s payments to manually update two or three.

Is that the status for the whole transaction or the individual payment within the transaction? This is where you will see the status of the individual payment – http://take.ms/PTl2b

The reason I’m asking is a transaction will not update it’s status if you apply a $0 payment with another incomplete payment. Applying another payment will not Approve another payment within a transaction, so I’m trying to narrow down what originally happened to the transaction.

Even though that’s resolved now, as this is a regular occurrence for us, it’d be good to work out why we keep getting these “incomplete” fully paid transactions on otherwise fully finished registrations.

When these transactions happen how long is it before you update them?

From memory, in that case it was both the whole transaction and individual payments that were marked incomplete. That issue has since been resolved.

Anywhere between 12 and 48 hours later generally, though it varies a lot.

Currently looking at our registrations page (the latest 20), there is a registration that is “approved” where the overall transaction is still “incomplete”, despite the individual payment on that transaction being “complete” (screenshot: https://snag.gy/zhXVS9.jpg).

I’ve forwarded a temporary login in relation to this thread: https://eventespresso.com/topic/extra-10-fees-randomly-charged-on-paypal-standard-for-one-day/

If you want to explore before we manually update that one, feel free.

Looking through the logs I can’t see cause for this.

It’s possible that the user is being returned to the site at the exact same time that the IPN hits your transactions page, which basically means that the transaction is being updated from two requests at once. We have checks in place to try and prevent this and the first request locks out the other until finished etc but it that both hit at exactly the same time it could still be possible.

You could try the simplified transactions template here:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-set-up-paypal-ipn/#troubleshooting

Add that template to your theme (you need to extract the .php file and place it within the root of your theme) then select the template within the ‘Transactions’ page. It basically removes all styling from the transaction page to make sure the IPN can be processed as quickly as possible, your users should not be hitting that page so styling won’t matter.
