Since upgrading to 4.6 I haven’t been able to process American Express cards with Paypal Pro. Paypal has looked at the issue and said it’s because the card type says “Amex” instead of “American Express”. Is there any way for me to change this?

Hi Melissa,

From the Paypal API documentation these are the valid card types:

Credit card type. Valid types are: visa, mastercard, discover, amex.

‘American Express’ is not a valid card type, but ‘amex’ is so I do not think this is the issue.

I believe you must also accept an agreement within your PayPal account to accept American Express cards. This should have been done when you setup Website Payments Pro but would be worth checking with PayPal that this has been set up.

Also if you go to Event Espresso -> Payment Methods -> PayPal Pro.

Is ‘American Express’ checked in the settings for supported card types? – http://take.ms/ZCMBt

I’m approved to take American Express (and have been able to do so through the PayPal virtual terminal). I have checked American Express in Payment Methods. PayPal has said that since the virtual terminal works, it must be something on my website.

Can you see if there is a specific error from PayPal or the transaction we can look at?

The Gateway Response for all the American Express cards says “CreditCardType : Invalid Parameter”.

I just got an email from PayPal support. It says, “Within your code you are passing the card type as “American Express” and it needs to be set to “AMEX”.” (Their original email had the terms switched.)

Hi Melissa,

I was wrong in my original reply, although the code seems to be using the correctly value (‘amex’) it was switched out right before sending to PayPal.

We’ll have a fix for this shortly.

Hi there,

The fix is ready and is available with Event Espresso 4.6.6.p.

The fix seemed to work. I’ve run a couple of American Express cards with no problem. Thank you!
