Day 5 – Add Trust Seals to Registration Checkout

Trust seals are a way to assure your registrants/attendees that their payments will be processed securely. Here are some examples:

Trust seals are generally available from payment processors such as the first two examples above from PayPal and Authorize.net respectively. Another place to find them is through your SSL certificate provider. If your site supports HTTPS — that is, you can go the HTTPS version of any page on your site (e.g. https://example.com/events/) and it loads, then you have an SSL certificate. These also secure your registration checkout pages which is important if you are accepting credit/debit card payments onsite through a payment method like Authorize.net, Stripe, PayPal Pro, etc.

Add a Trust Seal to your Sidebar for the Registration Checkout Page

On day 1 of this course, we shared that you could improve the focus on the registration checkout page by removing information in the sidebar. A trust seal can work in your favor as it reminds your attendees/registrants that your site securely processes payments.

The sidebar is a good location to add this seal. You’ll first need to locate the code for this seal which will be available from your payment processor. We can use PayPal as an example:

Step 1 – Select a trust seal from PayPal’s logo center
PayPal has a logo center here: https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/logo-center.
Look for an image that you would like to use as a trust seal. To minimize confusion, select an image that does not look like a payment image. For example, choose one that has the word “secure” in the message. Then click on See Source Code and then highlight and copy the entire code that is shown.

Step 2 – Create a new text widget and assign to the registration checkout page
Go to your WP-admin (WP dashboard) and then go to Appearance –> Widgets. Drag a Text widget to your sidebar. Then paste in the source code that you copied in step 1 for the trust seal. Next, assign this widget to the registration checkout page by placing a checkmark next to that page.

Note: assigning the text widget to the registration checkout page will be available if you setup the Display Widgets plugin as recommended on day 1 of this course.

If you offer multiple payment methods, then feel free to add more than one trust seal by repeating step 1 and step 2 above for your own payment processor or SSL certificate provider.

Tomorrow you will learn how to get exposure for your events.
