Website Redesign – Event Espresso Transition Process

Hi there!

Our website is currently using Event Espresso. We’re undergoing a total overhaul in the background in a development environment – new theme, total change in navigation, everything. We’d also like to start really shaping up our Event Espresso plugin to “be all it can be”, meaning style, function, really configuring the add-ons to work with our business.

However, we’re wondering how that works once we actually transition the site over.

Option 1: We get EE running smooth with the existing site while the new site is being designed, and then somehow transfer it. If that’s the path, what’s the best process for this so we do not lose hard-won features, design mods, historical data and setup?

Option 2: Or, is there a way to use EE in a development environment, getting it optimized and then transitioning all the historical data over so we can just launch it all at once?

I searched around a bit, perhaps didn’t use the right terms to find this out.

Hands down, the best on the market and I’m looking forward to giving EE the attention it deserves.

Cheers!

Hi Eleanor,

Thanks for your kind words!

The standard way of doing it would be to set everything up on the dev server and then transfer files (if appropriate) and transfer the full database.

If done correctly settings, data, and design mods (normally file based) will be moved over.

EE most certainly can be used in a development environment, but we recommend not adding the support licence key to the development site: you can still manually update the plugin if need be.

If you are not sure how to safely and correctly transfer a site, I would recommend contacting a web developer for assistance.

Hi Eleanor,

Thank you for the feedback, I’m glad EE works well for you 🙂

Before going into further details I have a question on your site setup. I can see you site currently uses Event Espresso 3, with the new site are you moving to use Event Espresso 4 or continuing to use EE3?

I ask because if you are still taking registrations during the time that the new site is being developer it will make a difference as to how you proceed forward.
