Several of my registrants trying to pay are also getting this error message. (please see my other post about unsupported cards)

I have had to help 30% of the registrants to enroll. This has been very time consuming.

Hi there,

Can you post the exact error message you are seeing? Below the error message there will be some small text that indicates the cause of the error, which will also help if you can send that as well. Thanks!

HI, this is an error that has repeated for several registrants. It says

“In order to register, your first name must be entered. Hit return and enter your first name”

Or very very very close to that.

Josh, in all honesty, I have had to hand hold about a third of the online registrations. It is not seamless for all. Very difficult, with this first name error being the most common. I have had to invoice through PayPal in order to allow people to pay. The pdf’s for receipts and invoices do not printing well. This is a small conference and I can’t imagine trying to manage a large event with this. It has messed up by member site, I had to disable that in order to proceed with enrollments. I’m not sure this program will be my choice going forward. Too fussy.

The error that you are reporting should only display if they don’t fill out their name. Have you tried testing the registration form, when you fill out the name fields, does it display the error?

Hello, we understand that you are frustrated. We try to get as much information upfront rather than guess for a solution.

The issue that you described could be caused by a caching solution or a plugin conflict.

Could you let us know who your web host is?

Also, are you able to duplicate this first name issue using a different web browser than the one that you are currently logged into your WordPress site with?

For example, if you are using Internet Explorer, then please try Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Safari.

I have been able to duplicate the error myself. I use both IE and Chrome.
I can’t speak to the browser issue for my customers, and I don’t have time to beta test your product.

Bluehost, WordPress 4.31, Twenty Eleven theme.

Hi there,

Is it this error? – http://take.ms/pn16N

We are not asking you to Beta test Event Espresso but when running registrations in both Chrome and IE I have no problems at all, as long as I provide the required information. So we need to narrow down how to reproduce the error you are seeing when registering.

I’ve selected single and multiple tickets, provided all of the required information for your registration form and finalized using Invoice without any issue.

Can you provide steps on how to reproduce the error please.

We are more than happy to investigate any issues you may have with Event Espresso, however we need to be able to see the error to fix it.

email I received today:

My coworker gave me your email address to help me with my ACHSA payment. I was having a hard time attempting to make my payment online for the two day conference. Would you be able to help me with this? I may be partially registered but need to make my payment. Please let me know what I need to do. Thanks so much!

Your link describes at least one of the problems people are having.
1. The first name error is definitely one of them.

2. The next one seems to be the problem getting into and paying via the third party site paypal. I have had multiple complaints about this. Please dont tell me to go to PayPal. I have done that. With the exception of AMEX, they take every credit card, and everyone describes being able to use the card for every other online payment.

I keep getting the following message:

The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number.

This is the only CC I have and it works for everything else.

any other suggestions?

Tony Warwick, maybe you should try to complete a payment. Although, not EVERYONE has the same problem. About 30%.

When I am asked

Also, are you able to duplicate this first name issue using a different web browser than the one that you are currently logged into your WordPress site with?
For example, if you are using Internet Explorer, then please try Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Safari.

It is asking me, or my clients to test the product on multiple browsers. That is why I made the beta testing comment, and I hold with that.

It would also seem that people are being forced into registering, even though I have all the registrations turned off. So when they go back, they have to re log-in, which makes sense if they don’t complete the payment the first time around.

I think somewhere in that process there may be a bug.

Hello, we are asking questions so that we can work towards a solution rather than troubleshoot by guessing.

1) Sporadic issues such as the one that you have described are usually caused by caching or a plugin conflict.

I checked your server headers and I’m not seeing any caching at this time:

https://urivalet.com/?http://www.statepen.org/event2015/#Report

However, I am seeing a minify plugin in use. If that changes the order of how the resources for registration checkout are loaded, then that will cause issues. Please go ahead and deactivate that plugin at this time.

Do you have any other performance related plugins running on your site?

2) Once a registrant/attendee is over on PayPal.com, then that process is being handled by PayPal. Event Espresso does not restrict the types of card that is in use. If a specific card is not working and you are on PayPal.com attempting to pay, then it would be best to check with PayPal support.

3) I could not find an account registration process on your site in terms of being forced to register for an account before being able to select a ticket and completing registration checkout.

Could you confirm that you were not previously using the WP User Integration add-on?

If it appears in your WP plugins screen, then please go ahead and deactivate it.

Thanks

Lorenzo

Event Espresso – WP Users (EE4.6+)
Deactivate | Edit
This adds the WP users integration.

okay I deactivated WP Users, and WP minify, and WP Super Cache.

I will tell PayPal people are having difficulty with the site. Again.

The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number.

This error is thrown by PayPal, not Event Espresso.

There are a few different reasons PayPal will throw that error, for example if that card is/has been linked to a PayPal account previously the user may not be able make a payment using that card without logging into the account.

Or if you enter an email address that has a PayPal account and try to use another card with that account.

Take a look here:

https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Receiving-money-Archive/Invoice-quot-The-card-you-entered-cannot-be-used-for-this/td-p/131478/page/2

https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Payments-Archive/The-card-you-entered-cannot-be-used-for-this-payment/td-p/460615

https://www.findmyshift.co.uk/what-types-of-credit-cards-are-accepted-by-paypal

They all point to the same reasons for that error and explains why it only effects some users and not others. Apparently its to try and prevent fraud, although I don’t see how that helps.

You could sign up for another gateway such as Stripe and advise any users having problems with Amex cards to use that gateway.

It would also seem that people are being forced into registering, even though I have all the registrations turned off. So when they go back, they have to re log-in, which makes sense if they don’t complete the payment the first time around.

Did you have the ‘Auto Create users with registrations?’ option enabled? – http://take.ms/NVZK9

With EE4 Users when you register and that option is enabled EE4 creates users with the information entered into the registration form, if the user returns to that registration, they need to log in to edit the details.

With that add-on disabled that should no longer happen.

Thanks Tony, That is extremely helpful and gives me solid information I can give to our registrants. Of course it would have been nice if Paypal had directed me toward that, and I fully appreciate your looking for that information.

Yes I do have auto create users with registrations. Perhaps I misunderstood the purpose of the system. I will disable it, and see if that makes life easier for all.

Thanks again, so very helpful. M 🙂
