Hello,
I want to go straight to “the event” and register/bookings page – is this possible?

It is possible yes, simply hide the event-registration page from your menu and link to a single registration page.
I gather with the user addon this negates the need for any member plugin?

Not so, no. The WP User Integration (Members) add on is not a membership plugin. All it does is assist with the integration of members and Event Espresso, specifically by providing a logged in user with Member prices.
So later after delegates have registered for the main conference we want to open up registrations for the electives (free tickets and members only events). Does this sound feasable: delegates log back in and register for electives.

Event Espresso currently doesnt have a parent/child or required event system in place. What this means is that you cannot require a person to buy one event in order to get access to others.

With a system like yours where there is one main event and people sometimes use a membership plugin to purchase the main event, and then Event Espresso to deal with the subsequent mini events. The one caveat here is that as everyone is a member you cannot split of separate member only events (everyone is a member!) .

You could have it that the main event is an event and open to all, with the other events as member only, the difficulty here is how to get the person registered.  We dont have anything in built yet though we are considering it. How far off is your volume discount add on?

It is in Beta and available on the Pre Release channel for licence holders. It currently only works if you have Multiple Event Registration add on active and in use.
