Hi Im looking at potentially using EE as a conference management system. We have a two day conference with several sessions on each day. Users buy either a one day or two day pass for the conference and there are several different categories of ticket (student, professional, non-professional etc.). Once they have their ticket users then sign up to attend the sessions of their choice. We need the system to be able to keep track of what sessions users are attending, place limits on the number of people who can attend each session, get reports on registrants and attendance etc., only allow people who have signed up for an account to register for the event and process payment through paypal.

EE ticks a lot of those boxes but I’m aware it doesn’t have an event>sessions model but rather every session would need to be its own event, which is a bit of a sticking point and is the focus of my questions here.

Say the conference consisted of four sessions a day for two days I could model that as a single event with 8 date-time points spread over the days right? Could I then set the ticketing up so that I could create a day pass for the first day and then user has the option of deciding whether they want to register to attend each individual session for that day, or (and I think this is the case) would the day pass automatically register them for every session on that day as they are essentially buying tickets for those specific event instances?

The suggestion I’ve seen posted on here before is to use the site itself as the conference ticket via membership plugins and create the sessions as free events within EE which I think would be straightforward with a single ticket type but not so much with multiple ticket types. The only way off the top of my head that would work is if different ticket types equated to different users roles or groups, but would that work with EE? If I created a user role or group of ‘Day 1’ for example could I then restrict the visibility of events so that only ‘Day 1’ events showed to users with that role/group?

And if all else fails how open is EE to modification/extension? Would it be feasible for me to overload it with custom functions that suit my needs?

Thanks for your time
Andrew

Also another question, it looks the wp-user integration is not available in EE4 so wouldthe only option to get those functions at this point be to use EE3?

Hi Andrew,

Datetimes could be used here. So let’s say you have an event with 3 tickets, Sat, Sun, Weekend. You could set it up so there are 3 datetimes as well (Sat, Sun, Weekend) and the tickets would be attached to them (Sat ticket -> Sat datetime, Sun ticket ->Sun datetime, Weekend ticket -> both Sat & Sun datetimes).

This can then be used to help track overall and individual day capacity.

We do have a system to Require a ticket, but I don’t think that’s going to work here as there is no logic to it, which is a shame as it would of made some things easier.

As such you would be reliant on customers good faith to select a premium ticket alongside the session tickets.

If the sessions are free, you could use questions, but you would be limited to not knowing session capacity which may not be ideal.

EE4.5 shipped with an improved capabilities system, so yes you can use code to manipulate things based on roles and capabilities.

The EE4 Wp User Integration addon is currently being worked on, we have a basic Beta version available for licence holders to download and test, which includes a feature to limit a ticket sale based on role: screen shot http://take.ms/iDDZc
