Is there a simple way – in EE3 or EE4 – to authenticate that a user is or is not a member i.e. entitled to member pricing? (e.g. using a code, checking against a member list, etc.)

Hi,

In EE3, if a user is logged in they are classed as a member.

If you are using S2Member, we also have a small Beta addon that can change at which level they are classed as members (e.g. If you have level 0, level 1 and level 2, by default 0,1 and 2 are all members. With this addon you can set it so only 1 and above are members).

EE4 currently does not have a membership system in place. However as events are custom post types, you could use a standard membership plugin and block off access to the post/event depending on membership level. Not all membership plugins integrate with EE4, my brief testing shows S2member seems fine, but Members by Justin Tadlock doesn’t do so well.
