Paypal payment not updating for every transaction

I have an event open at the moment and payment is required via paypal. When payment is received, status should update to approved for the person registered. This is happening some but not all of the time- I can see that the person has paid by checking my paypal account, but their status does not change. Can you explain or help me to fix?
