Launching new site – messages are missing

We purchased a new EE license in Nov 2016. We put it in a site we were creating to replace an outdated website, which used a limited version of EE. I thought we were ready to go and test registrations appeared to work well, generating nice confirmations and notifications.
We wanted the new site to use our present URL, so the address used for building the new site included temp in its name. When we launched the new site, we replaced the temp.XXXX.org with XXXX.org and gave the old site the temp.XXXX.org name.
Now, none of the messages are working and I cannot figure out what to do. Help! Registrations are finally possible, but no message are confirming registration, notifying the registrar, confirming payment, generating invoices. Help!
