I am setting up a site with EE3, and most events will be public (i.e., anyone can sign up for them) but there will also be private events that should only be registered for by people who have been invited to that event. I had hoped I could just password protect the event like you can do to any wordpress page or post, but I see that isn’t possible. Is there any way I can hide certain events, or maybe certain event categories even, from the main calendar, so that when people are invited to an event, we give them a link directly to that event on the site, and no one else would be able to find a link to it on the site? I would prefer not to have to get into setting up members and page permissions, etc.

As soon as I posted the question I figured out how to do it using a shortcode to only show events in a specific category (my public events category).

[ESPRESSO_CALENDAR event_category_id="public-event-1410198770"]

Thought I would post my solution in case it is helpful.
