Due to other legacy systems that are crucial to our customer service, our users use IE 8 for our website. The programs we interface with do not work in Chrome or Firefox. That’s just the way it is, so I have to work within those constraints. I’m building a new site on WordPress, and planned to install EE4, but I have to know if EE 4 is wholly compatible or am I going to inherit a ton of issues? Please be totally straight and thorough with your reply as I have to know exactly what I’m getting into.
The only areas of concern are going to be CSS and JavaScript issues, where IE failed to follow web standards. Fortunately, there are a number of standard IE “shims”, which are routinely injected into pages to make them IE friendly. I’m fairly certain that we have used all the standard IE-backwards-compatible codes. You can sign up for a test drive at http://demoee.org/ or browse some of the EE4 example sites. The “lite”, free version of EE4 is scheduled to be released on wordpress.org sometime in the next two weeks. I would try using the test drive site and the free version with IE8, and see how it works.
