I’ve worked out what the issue is but I need some suggestions as to how to prevent it. Users are trying to register to multiple events with multiple browser window open.
Is there anyway of showing a message to inform them that they are being silly and should only register for one event at a time? What session variable should I check exists before allowing them to proceed with registering?

Hi there, have you considered using the multiple event registration add-on (https://eventespresso.com/wiki/ee4-multiple-event-registration-add-on/) to help with this?
That will allow events to be added to a cart and then checkout could occur afterwards. It is available on your account:

Hmm we have over 80 events they can pick from which makes it difficult. Also the Add To Cart button doesn’t appear because I have built my own custom ticket selector so I’d have to build that again from the new template. I think I will just hijack the error message and change the text to say “You can only register for one event at a time”.

Alright, does the event listings page have a sidebar? If so, you could add some help messaging in a text widget that says that you can register for one event at a time.
