Hi Folks,
My client saw a notice in the WordPress admin that said some payment gateways would be removed in 2025. They are currently using the PayPal Express Checkout with Smart Buttons Add-on – will that continue to work?

Hi there,
PayPal Express Checkout with Smart Buttons Add-on (just PayPal Smart Buttons for short) has indeed been deprecated in favour of PayPal Commerce.
In short we are phasing out the payment methods using their (PayPal’s) older integration methods in place of their most recent integration method with the most features.
PayPal Smart buttons was introduced to use the Express checkout buttons (the smart buttons) and Venmo, which PayPal Commerce supports out of the box.

Generally, I recommend you set up both for a short transition period, however, PayPal Commerce and PayPal Smart Buttons are 2 payment methods that cannot be used simultaneously. So in this instance you’ll need to deacitvate PayPal Smart Buttons, then activate Paypal Commerce and connect your PayPal account to that and confirm it loads on the checkout.
