Hi Guys,
I have updated the version of WP and the Theme to the latest version. When I then go to update EE the custom changes to the CSS that have been made disappear. Is there any way of being able to update to the latest version of EE without loosing my customisation?

Hi there,

When you update Event Espresso (or any plugin/theme for that matter), WordPress basically deletes the current version and re-uploads the updated version in its place. If you have modified any of the core files then your customizations will be lost.

With CSS its better to add your styles to either your child themes style.css or a plugin such as Reaktiv CSS builder or My Custom CSS.

You’ll need to add any of your custom styles to one of the options above to override the default styles within EE and prevent those customisations from being lost on update.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your response. Is it essential that we carry out the last update that was made available?
Also the changes that were made to the CSS for EE were made under the plugins file. Will this make any difference to the above?

Thanks

Hello,

Editing the core plugin for Event Espresso or your theme files directly isn’t recommended. This is because when you update through your WordPress site, then the files and folders are removed and replaced.

You could go with Tony’s suggestion and add those customizations through a plugin like Simple Custom CSS or Reaktiv CSS Builder and that way they won’t be lost when you update your site.

Hello,

Many changes have been made to the existing template for EE customisation. Is there a simple way of keeping all the changes that have been made, rather than having to find each change in individual files?

Also if we don’t update will there be any negative implications?

Thanks

It depends on the files your have edited, some can be loaded from custom locations (such as /wp-content/uploads/espresso/templates/), so even then to prevent them from being lost you will need to find each file and load them from that location.

However most of the output for Event Espresso is done through your theme, not actually EE (again it depends on the content) so it depends on what has actually been changed.

Also if we don’t update will there be any negative implications?

We can’t provide support for previous versions, even more so when they have been modified.

We provide a huge amount of hooks within EE to allow changes to be made, most of the templates used within EE can be loaded from your child theme and CSS changes can usually be done by override the default styles using the child theme or the plugins mentioned above, so in almost all cases it is not necessary to modify core.

We can’t say if you will run into any negative effects from this update, if none of the bugfixes here:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/ee4-changelog/#4.8.41

apply to you then possibly not. But eventually your going to need to update EE, its best to do your customizations correctly now (and continue to do them in the same way afterwards) or is just becomes more difficult for you to update as time goes on.
