Since the latest wordpress update, my site has been crashing completely. Host company says a conflict with Event Espresso is the cause. How do I update the plug in to keep this from happening?

Hi there,

Do you have the error being thrown? If the site is crashing an error should be shown in the error logs.

What version number of Event Espresso are you currently running? Simply updating Event Espresso may not be the solution here.

Version 4.9.46.p

Will try to get the error log

Error log has 33 references to event-espresso; would it be easier to send you the whole log?

Don’t know if it’s related, but SiteLock is also flagging two things related to eventespresso

Hi,

headers already sent (output started at /home4/giboardr/public_html/Main/wp-content/themes/cleanlab/functions.php:1460)

Is actually the problem. May I ask what’s the code in /themes/cleanlab/functions.php line 1460?

The last errors you posted may go away if you update to the current version of EE4. This is because the “your ticket selections could not be processed due to a server timing error” part has been removed in later versions.

How do I find that line in the clean lab php file? Please forgive my ignorance; I am not well versed in PHP

I have the function.php file but it appears to only have 1458 lines…

?

There may be some “hidden” characters after 1458. That’s quite common actually if a code editor was used to edit the files. If you have a backup of the theme, you could replace the functions.php file with the backup (or a fresh copy of that file) and that should fix the issue.

Then, if you haven’t already done so, you can update to the current version of EE4.

I looked at the same file in a code editor, there were more lines but that one was empty. I went ahead and replaced with a backup of the original.

Do I need to delete EvenEspresso from my plug in directory to update? I see on my dashboard here where I can get the newest copies of the plug in, but am unsure how to go about proceeding. The process for backing up the database is confusing and the help page doesn’t match what I’m seeing in MyPHPAdmin – I can’t locate the wp_event file

You’re probably looking at EE3 documentation. If you do a database backup, you should just do a backup of the entire database. There are a number of WordPress plugins that automate this, no need to use phpmyadmin. If you want to use phpmyadmin that’s fine, just backup the entire database.

Then, on your site’s WP Plugins page, there should be a notification to update Event Espresso 4. If there’s no notification for an update, then that may be because someone has disabled the 1-click updates. Ideally that restriction should be removed, then you’ll be able to just click “update” and the software will update.

Your other option is to is delete old version of the EE4 plugin from the plugins page, then upload a fresh zip file using the WP plugin installer. You can download a fresh zip file from your account page.

Currently, the following are installed but not activated:

Event Espresso
Event Espresso Attendee Mover
Event Espresso Promotions

The following are installed and active
Event Espresso – enable all countries
Event Espresso – Grid View Template
Event Espresso – Ticketing

If I just delete the main plug in and reinstall, will I lose my registration database? And do I need to disable any of the other Event Espresso plug ins to reinstall the main one?

No.

And do I need to disable any of the other Event Espresso plug ins to reinstall the main one?

Not usually. Usually they’ll self-deactivate if they need to, and after you’ve reactivated EE4 you can reactivate them. Since your software is quite out of date some of those add-ons likely also need to be updated. So you can deactivate and remove those too, then repeat the same steps for reinstalling the add-on plugins.

Side note: You can deactivate and remove the enable all countries plugin. That’s a one-time-use plugin where after it’s initially activated, it’s done its job and can be removed.

OK, deleted and reinstalled the core, attendee mover and promotions plug in, it then let me update ticketing from the dashboard. Disabled All Countries as well. Site is still up. Fingers crossed. Thank you!

Only thing to note is that we’re now getting a stream of emails about old registrations. Is that normal?

It’s not normal to jump that many versions, so weird things may happen. What you can do is go over to Event Espresso > Messages and delete all the messages from the queue. Then, go to Event Espresso > Messages > Settings and set the message cleanup to 3 months, then save.
