URGENT HELP PLEASE: Event espresso is breaking website

Hi,

I’m not sure what happened but on Friday, as my client was working on adding an event, the plugin just broke the website. The website completely went blank on the frontend but everything was fine in the backend. I deactivated all plugins and it seems that all event espresso plugins is what is causing the website to go blank – including the add-ons – social media, calendar plugins. We’re about to go live with the site so need urgent help on Monday.

Can some please help and have a look please. Would appreciate your attention. Thanks.

Hi again,

I just realized that the issue is only when the shortcode for event list and calendar appears. Similar to this… https://eventespresso.com/forums/2012/06/espresso_events-shortcode-causing-page-format-issues/

I’m unsure how to actually fix this, even after reading the post and don’t want to risk making it worst. Can someone help me please?

Well there are some errors coming up in the console but nothing that should be causing this.

Has anything been updated recently?

Can you test by temporarily renaming the uploads/espresso/templates file to rule out that it is being caused by a modified file?

When the error happened, I hadn’t updated anything. My client was just trying to add an event when it happened. I have updated the event espresso after that to see if that would make a difference. But nothing.

I have renamed the custom files but no change. I renamed it from custom_event_list_display.php to custom_event_list_display1.php

Can I purchase a priority ticket to ask somebody to have a look ASAP today?

No need for the token just yet.

Is it possible to get your login details in order to look into this?

If so, please send them via https://eventespresso.com/send-login-details/

NOTE: login details need to be Admin level.

Thanks Dean. Just sent in the details.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,

OK well the core plugin seems to have been modified so it will make it more difficult to troubleshoot it due to the unknown level of modifications.

I would suggest uploading a default copy of the plugin and deactivate your modified version and test with the default to see if the errors still occur. You will need to rename the folder for one of the copies otherwise you will get a conflict on installation.

If they do then it will be a case of troubleshooting all the plugins and theme by deactivating and seeing if the issue persists, and reactivating one by one.

There are some 404 errors and a few other errors in the console, but nothing that should cause this.

I know this sounds like fairly basic advice, but there isn’t anything obvious as to what is causing this, it could be a conflict, it could be server related, it could be due to modifications. We need to rule some of it out.

I’m not sure how to deactivate the custom files add on as its not a plugin. How do I do that?

geektastic

July 29, 2013 at 3:17 am

Hi, below I’ve cut and pasted your advice with my responses.

“I would suggest uploading a default copy of the plugin” – I have uploaded the latest default copy of the plugin and installed it.

“and deactivate your modified version” – I’m not sure what you mean by this but I just deleted the old version. I do have a custom files addon but I’m not sure whether this is what you meant. I haven’t done anything with that other than download a copy of it to my desktop.

“and test with the default to see if the errors still occur.” – I have uploaded fresh install but problem still occurs.

“You will need to rename the folder for one of the copies otherwise you will get a conflict on installation.” – Which folder are you referring to?

Hi,

Has the core plugin been modified as the menu system for it is different?

To deactivate the custom files add on you need to rename the wp-content/uploads/espresso/templates directory to something like templates_old

Have you tried deactivating all plugins except event espresso and seeing if the issue persists?

geektastic

July 29, 2013 at 3:47 am

Yes, the menu system has been modified. Its under ‘Events’. Sorry I forgot to mention.

I’ve now deactivated the custom files by renaming it but nothings changed.

I’ve also deactivated all plugins except for event espresso and the issue still persists. What should I do now?

The only thing I could think of that I did before this happened was I setup a staging site the day before and accidentally put in the license key into the staging site, which is on the same url but different folder. But then I requested a license key reset, and received that same license key as before. So I put that in hoping that was the cause of the problem. But it seems its not. And it was actually triggered when my client started to put a new event in.

Do you have any objection to me deactivating plugins?

geektastic

July 29, 2013 at 4:09 am

Is it possible to wait 1 hour before doing so? I’m just having an update conference call with my client on the website. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No problem, let me know when I can.

Hi,

Have you managed to resolve the FTP issue yet? I think I will need FTP access.

Thanks

July 29, 2013 at 5:50 am

No, I can’t get it to work. Can you resend me a private form, so I can give you access to files in a different way?

Thanks for the additional data. Im still not seeing where the issue lies, I will refer this onto the rest ofg the team for feedback and get back to you.

geektastic

July 29, 2013 at 7:36 am

Ok, thanks. Much appreciated. I’m going to switch off the plugins for now as I need to work on other components of the site, where the plugin is restricting the view. Just give me a buzz/msg when you’d like it to be activated, I will turn it on and stop working on the site.

Hi there,

I would suggest turning on wp-debug in the wp-config.php file. Then you can try activating Event Espresso and check for PHP errors. Please let us know if you see any errors.

The plugins that are throwing the session start errors could be deactivated for now. If you check the error_log file in the root you’ll see some more errors being thrown which may be related. Here is one for an example:

PHP Warning: session_start() [<a href='function.session-start'>function.session-start</a>]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /xx/wp-content/plugins/any-mobile-theme-switcher/plugin_interface.php:6

Hi Josh,

I’m not sure what you want me to do? I have looked at the log and deactivated the plugins that are throwing up a session start error. Is that what you asked me to do?

Josh

Yes, any of the plugins or themes that are throwing session_start errors or Fatal errors can be deactivated in order to troubleshoot this further. While doing so it would be good to have Event Espresso activated and the WP_DEBUG constant set to true.

July 29, 2013 at 9:08 am

Hi Josh,

Thank you for the clarification. I think I’ve deactivated all of them now and set the WP-DEBUG to true. Please do let me know if you need me to do anything else.

If you look in the plugins admin screen, you’ll see that Event Espresso and the Event Espresso calendar have been deactivated for now, and the site is still white screening on the front end. You may be able to narrow down the issue by deactivating all of the active plugins and setting the WP theme to use a fresh copy of twentytweleve. Then you can reactivate the plugins one by one.

July 29, 2013 at 10:32 am

Hi Josh,

I’ve now put a fresh copy on twentytwelve, deactivated all plugins and turned them on one by one. It is still showing that Event Espresso causing the white screen. I tried to see if the screen is still white while Event Espresso is deactivated, but not once did I get the result you had. I wish it wasn’t true, but I’m unable to replicate your last observation no matter what I do.

What should I do next?

How and where is it showing that Event Espresso is causing the white screen? I have not seen any error messages pointing to Event Espresso.

Here’s an example of one of the errors that I was seeing on your site:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wpdm_setup_package_data() in /xx/wp-content/plugins/wpdm-archive-page/wpdm-archive-page.php on line 425

from the /resources/ page

I’m not saying there are any error message pointing to EE. But if you look now… I have changed template to twentytwelve. I have deactivated all plugins. At this point, all text on the site (see homepage) are visible. The minute I turn on EE, the text underneath the header disappears. Would this not mean EE is causing it? Are you saying you are unable to replicate this?=

I’m sorry if I’m wrong, I’m not saying it is EE’s error. All I know is when I activate it, that is when I have a problem. As I followed your instructions and have ruled out all other plugins to causing the white screen. If you think its another plugin, I’m happy for you to point it out so I can focus on fixing that other plugin.

I don’t think it’s another plugin since it appears to be an issue that happens even when all the other plugins are deactivated.

That said, I think it’s an issue with the content entered for the event description the event with the ID of 12.

If you’ll notice, you can go directly to the other event and it loads up okay:

http://www.yoursite.uk/event-registration/?ee=27

This one throws the Internal server error:

http://www.yoursite.uk/event-registration/?ee=12

It’s likely the combination of the event_list shortcode in the event’s description *and* that the setting in Event Espresso>Template settings are set to display short descriptions. I added a more tag above where the event_list shortcode is set and that appears to fix the issue. That cuts off the event description where it displays in the event_list. It might have been an infinite loop occuring with event_list trying to display an event_list within itself.

Thank you Josh!!! You are amazing!!! :)) I was almost giving up just now.
Thanks so much for your patience and perseverance!! It seems my client had put that shortcode in the description and that’s when everything went to a halt.

Thanks so much for helping me today. I will never forget how helpful you guys are!!! Thank you, thank you! 🙂

I hope you have a lovely lovely day!!!
