I am getting the error shown below. Something seem to have broken since such as my map is now not showing but I will go make sure it isn’t just the checkbox disabled. Do I just manually create the folder, what went wrong? I need to get this resolved ASAP as I have a registration event to run tomorrow.

Hi Ernest,

The error message indicates a server issue where WordPress cannot create a new directory when it updates the plugin files. Can you check with your host to see if the server is running low on disk space? It may also be an issue with file permissions, but either way your host should be able to help.

I am the host so I have full access to the server. I will check the drive space but it has been doing regular backups without error. What should the permissions be?

Permissions will be different from one server to another, you can follow this general guide to make sure your server has the correct permissions set up to allow WordPress to write to files:

https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

Alternatively, you can FTP up the updated version of the Event Espresso plugin’s files by removing the old plugin folder from wp-content/plugins, and upload the unzipped Event Espresso plugin folder to the wp-content/plugins location.

I have been covered up and will verify permissions in the morning. Today however when I tried to update I got slightly different info. I don’t know why am getting this now and didn’t earlier.

Hi there,

Those errors all point to the same issue.

WordPress can not create the correct directories or copy files from temp to the plugin directory. It is able to download the update but can’t copy the files to the correct location, so its an issue with the server setup.

Did you double check the disk space available and that the permissions are setup according to the link Josh provided here:

https://eventespresso.com/topic/upgrade-wont-complete-some-things-seem-to-be-off/#post-168384

Is this a Windows or Linux based server?

This folder already exists and has two files in it.
An error occurred while updating Event Espresso: Could not create directory. event-
espresso-core-reg/caffeinated/admin/extend/general_settings/templates
The two files are: debug_log_settings.template and use_venue_and_staff_manager_settings.template

I am not sure where the other one is going or what it is trying to do but I can not find it.

If I copy remove the plugin and copy the new one up, will I lose all my events I have setup now? There seems to be some subfolders that indicate some customizations might be lost. Can I unzip over the top of the old possibly and not lose anything? Also, the plugin says my pages are all good but when I try to go to the event cart I get a 404.
I appreciate any help you can provide. I do not mind providing you access to the backend either.

Hi Ernest,

Your events and settings are not recorded to the plugin folder, they are actually stored in the database, which is a separate part of your server from where all the WordPress plugin files go. You’ll likely need to remove the plugin files and reinstall fresh files using FTP.

I actually went in and gave the users full control to the plugins directory and it still failed so maybe something just got corrupted along the way.
So I will just rename the old folder and then unzip the plugin? I will update you on the results.

Oh I forgot, will I need to reinstall all add-ons as well? or are they in different folders?

Ernest Coldwell

Ok, renamed old folder and unzipped new. no longer shows as an update available. When I refresh all looks well but when I try to view the event cart, I still get 404. Any ideas there?

Hi Ernest,

If you go to the WP > Permalinks page in your browser, does that fix the 404? If not, what’s set for the Permalinks settings there?

Ernest Coldwell

August 19, 2015 at 12:45 pm

Going to the permalinks does not resolve the issue. I didn’t change anything but hit save and it does not fix the issue.
Under Common Settings I have
http://hurricane.football/2015/08/19/sample-post/

Under Optional I only have these two with anything in them
Product category base = product-category
Product tag base = product-tag

Product permalink base
Custom Base = /shop/%product_cat%

Do I have something wrong?

Possibly, especially if your server isn’t set up to use postname permalinks. Do the 404 errors go away if you switch to Default permalinks?

Ernest Coldwell

August 19, 2015 at 1:03 pm

That did it! It works now. My understanding is you don’t really want to use the default for SEO reasons. What do you suggest? I really don’t like the date in the link format.

You could try configuring your server so it can use WP postname permalinks. I can’t really give you specific advice on how that’s done on a Windows server, but I can point you to a few guides:

New issue, I am now getting this error and I only have the one domain hurricane/football. hurricanefootballbooster.club points to the same location but isn’t in use and I have not set EE up on even a test domain. I am using Multisite WP. I also upgraded yesterday so maybe it is a bug with the upgrade. I am not on Billie yet but the version just prior to it for WP.

Hi Ernest,

Looks like somewhere along the way the domain that’s associated with your key was changed from hurricane.football to http://www.hurricane.football. I’m going to reset your license key and that should fix things for you. You may need to go into the main WP site as super admin and resave the Event Espresso > General Settings page so that the message will go away.

Hello guys, in relation to the permalinks issue I had earlier, has anything changed in the last few versions relating to permalinks? The reason I ask is they all worked before across the board. After one of the updates, that is when the multiple issues I have had started including the permalinks. I didn’t realize what a pain in the butt not using them to alter the ?page_id=xxx to something more user friendly would be. I have been walking all my links lately and 80% are broken due to switching back to the default. My event is September 19 and we are now directing people to the site to register. I would really like to go back to changing them to a user friendly setting.
Is everything working properly with Billie? If so, maybe I should upgrade and see if it works.
Thanks you!

Hi Ernest, Event Espresso 4 is compatible with WP 4.3 and with pretty permalinks. We use both of those options on our testing sites.

Hi Ernest, I’m glad to hear that things are working out. Were there any other questions that we could answer for you today?

Thanks
