You must back up your site before upgrading.
I’ve just started using EE and upgraded to EE4 yesterday to fix an issue with event emails. However the upgrade caused an error with my (single WP 3.8.1) site and the site would not reload – the effect being that my website was MIA. Thankfully, the site was backed up and could be restored. Now continuing with EE3 and trying to rectify the email issue

Hi Roy,

Ouch. I’m sorry to see that you had issues. Can we help with anything?

Did you happen to have both Event Espresso versions active? You should deactivate one prior to activating the other. Also, if something like this happens again, you can always delete a plugin through FTP.

Let us know if we can help with anything.

Hi Jonathan. I hadn’t deactivated v3. Every other plugin on our sites can be updated without deactivating the previous version, however I always back up as a precaution. As the site would not load following the installation (ie the screen just went completely blank), I couldn’t deactivate, however my coder was able to restore a site backup using v3. Thanks for your assistance with this. I’ll work on the underlying issue of event emails.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. As a note to future readers, EE3 must be de-activated prior to upgrading. The two versions are drastically different under the hood so a standard update will not work.

I’ll look to make sure this is covered more in the documentation.
