Hi,

We have a customer running a site on EE Version 3.1.30.7P, and we are now rebuilding the site.

To this end we have cloned the site to a development server and rebuilt the theme to bring it up to date.

The next step is to upgrade to the latest version 3 release of Event Espresso, and ideally I would like to do this on the development version first, and then when ready deploy to the live url.

If I go ahead and renew their license so that I can download and update, is it ok to do so on the development site and then set live when ready?

Many thanks

Jon

just for further info, they current run Event Espresso Version 3.1.30.7P with Calendar, Members, Multi-event and Permissions.

I presume all these would update with a renewed business license?

Would they be best moving now to EE4? Is there a migration path for events already in the system?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jon,

On the development site simply leave the license key field blank (if there is currently a key in use on the dev site just remove it and save)

You will need to update Event Espresso manually on the dev site:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/updating-event-espresso/#update_manually

However I have a quick question, are you looking to update to the latest version of Event Espresso 3 or 4?

I did wonder if now was as good a time as any to upgrade to v4, but that largely depends on a migration path for existing events.

What would you advise, happy to go with best advice ๐Ÿ™‚

Calendar, Members, Multi-event and Permissions.

I presume all these would update with a renewed business license?

As long as that is Permissions ‘Basic’ then yes. (looking at your account it likely is)

Would they be best moving now to EE4? Is there a migration path for events already in the system?

When you first activate EE4 it will ask you if you wish to Migrate your EE3 data over to EE4, however to do this the version of EE3 currently in use on the site must be 3.1.36+

So in your case you’d need to update to 3.1.36 or higher, than activate EE4.

(Be sure to make a database backup before doing any of the above, or even a full site backup, just to be safe)

However, before doing that, does EE4 suit all of your needs? Do you use Promo codes for example? Or rely on the ‘My Events’ section of the WP Members Add-on?

Looking at the current site, I don’t believe they are making use of the members add-on, and they don’t use promotional codes.

By the sound of things I will need to purchase the EE 3 Business license as a first step and bring everything up to date. We can then look at buying EE4 if that is the best way forward.

Does that make sense?

Yes that make sense.

If you purchase the EE3 Business License you will get access to EE3 and the EE3 Add-ons included with the license, EE4 and the EE4 equivalent of the EE3 Add-ons. (this is to make it as easy as possible to update from EE3 to EE4)

The option is the EE4 Everything License, you would then have access to EE4 and ALL of the EE4 Add-ons (but not EE3 and its Add-ons) you can still update to the latest version of EE3 using the Lite version of EE3 as that will still update the database to the latest version.

The business licenses allows you to use either version on a single site, so if EE4 does not currently suit all of your needs, you can continue to use the latest version of EE3, then update to EE4 when it does.

That help?

Many thanks Tony,

I’ve gone with the business license and upgraded to the latest EE3 and then worked through the add-ons.

I get this up to speed and then look at EE4 and see if it is applicable.

many thanks again,

Jon
