It depends on what version you are upgrading from. It was fairly recently that we started using an one click update system, and if you have no message in Plugins > Installed Plugins regarding this then it is likely your version is older than that. Also your licence key has not been activated, without that one click upgrades do not work.
If you cannot access the one click upgrades then you will need to manually install the latest version. If your current version of Event Espresso is very old (3.0.X) then it is recommended to make sure no events are running before upgrade and to test the upgrade first on an test server as their are large differences in the new versions databases compared to the old one.
