Hi EE team, I am trying to update some events on the backend of my website and am having major issues. Whenever I try to update or publish an event, I get a blank screen (See screenshot) and the changes do not get made. I have updates to do but when I ran the updates, it was saying I needed to renew my data and essentially erased everything! I panicked and contacted my web hosting to restore the back-up from yesterday and now I am scared to update my EE. Please help! Hi there, A ‘blank’ screen means a ‘fatal error’ is being thrown and your site is (correctly) set to not show those errors to visitors. In your control panel with your host you will usually have a section you can use to view any errors thrown on your site, if you check there can you see any errors from around the same time you try to update an event? Check that and post the results here before you attempt the steps below.
Your site is currently running 4.9.XX.p of Event Espresso and the latest version of 4.10.2.p Whenever there is a ‘major’ point release for Event Espresso (4.9.xx to 4.10.xx) usually means we’ve made a change to how data is stored in the database and EE will need to run a ‘migration’ when it updates which updates the database to the latest version for you. That’s what it sounds like happened above, when you updated EE to the latest version it went into ‘Maintance mode’ and shows you the option to migrate your data. You won’t see any of your events whilst EE is maintenance mode so you just need to follow the on-screen instructions to run the update. There is also an option to not migrate and start fresh but obviously most of the time you’ll just want to migrate to the latest version. I recommend you create a current database backup (either through you host or using a plugin like BackUpWordPress) just to be safe and then update to the latest version of Event Espresso. EE will go back into maintenance mode when you do this, but you just go to Event Espresso -> Maintenance and follow the instructions to migrate your data. You want to click Yes to migrate and then follow the steps, I know that the migration in 4.10.xx is related to questions so if you don’t have a huge number of questions in your install it shouldn’t take long at all. Here is a quick example of what it should look like. Update from 4.9.xx to 4.9.10 and EE may show you the above page like this: Go to Event Espresso -> Maintenance and you’ll see this: If you have created a backup as mentioned above, click the ‘My database is backed up’ button and you’ll see this: Click ‘Begin Database Update’ and EE will update your database. Once finished EE will show you a notice to say it has finished, click ok and EE will switch out of maintenance mode again. If you have any problems doing so just let us know and we can investigate. |

Ok. I have contacted my host and they updated the PHP which fixed the fatal error issue! I will work on the EE update later today. I will keep you posted. Thanks! |
