Hi James,

Not currently. I spoke to one of the developers about this and a few other ideas for event-categories today and there will be some improvements made to the category manager while Event Espresso 4 completes its beta process. Right now we’re looking into a few options right now:
not setting a default if no category is selected on saving an event
being able to change the default category slug to something else (you can already change the label, but not the slug. This option is more akin to what WP core does)

If you have any other ideas, we’d love to hear them.

Hi Josh,

Okay no worries. Though I have tried to change the label only and it just keep creating a new category call uncategorized.

It does the same for me too James, I’ll add a note to the ticket advising about that too.

Hi,

It will be added into a future version, it’s best to keep an eye on the change log https://eventespresso.com/wiki/ee4-changelog/

Child categories can be added already (via the event) but currently can’t be edited, we have already added some support in for that at the same time as this topic was looked at, so it should come in the same release.

So it possible to create the categories like below:
Events Main ->
General
Cat 1
Cat 2
Policy
Cat 1
Cat 2

Etc…..

Cat 1 & 2 are child categories of General and Policy.

It’s just like normal WP Post Categories, so if you have General then Cat 1 and Cat 2 can be children of it, If you have Policy, Cat 3 and Cat 4 can be children of it.

Categories cannot be children of multiple categories, though a parent category can have multiple children and grandchildren.

Yes but i don’t see how i do this, can you supply screenshots or instructions in doing this. I can add categories but set one under another category.

Hi James,

Here’s a screenshot that shows how to assign a new category to a parent category within the event editor’s Event Categories box:

https://www.evernote.com/shard/s4/sh/3e03e54c-18e3-4062-adc0-070fb1948807/b10af35ca02969871e1b637483529a52

Event Espresso 4.3 adds an interface to assign to Parent categories within the Category editor. It’s currently available in the pre-release channel if you’d like to download it and try it out.

You can opt-in to the pre-release channel by going to your account page and clicking on the opt-in box. Once that’s done, you’ll see a link to download the latest pre-release version in the EE4 Pre-release tab (it’s currently Event Espresso 4 Regular – Pre Release v4.3.0.beta.024)

Hi James,

Event Espresso 4.2.9 was released and it includes a change that allows for the default category slugs to be changed or deleted.

Along with that, it also adds the category hierarchy editing within the category editor.
