When a couple register, occasionally they will wind up with two participants under the same name (they checked the box that said second participant is the same). I want to manually edit their contact info, but changing one person’s first name seems to change it for both contacts. How do I fix this, short of editing the underlying database?

Hi there,
If you view the ‘second’ registration from the list you should see a ‘create contact’ button under the contact details – http://take.ms/dhloY
Click that button and EE will create a new ‘contact’ for that registration using the same details it currently has, you’ll be taken directly to the ‘duplicate’ contact so you can edit the details.
Update the contact with the new details and save – http://take.ms/OyFHL
Now the second registrant has been slipt into its own contact and the details changed.
