Translation issues

I have uploaded the French .mo file and while the translation works in most places, there are some instances in which translation strings, which are translated in the .mo file, do not display and the English original shows instead. These bits are a bit everywhere, for instance in certain dropdown lists in the admin area. But even more strange is that the same string shows in French on the individual event page, while it shows in English on the main events page (for instance “Map and Directions”, which is of course translated in the .mo file).

Thank you for any suggestion.

Hi BD,

You should be editing the PO file, rather than the MO file.

Are you using Poedit to translate? Whether you are or not you should do a search for the string as currently there may be duplicates and phrases may be broken up into several strings, especially if they are separated by a variable, e.g (not a real string) “You have bought 5 tickets” is likely to be “You have bought” and “tickets” as 5 is an unknown quantity provided by a variable.

Does that make sense?

I would also make sure that you downloaded the PO and MO files correctly from Github as their download process is a little weird and if done incorrectly you will get a garbage file

To download the PO file – left click the link on the main page and then right click the Raw button in the top right of the page that comes up and save as.

To download the MO file – left click the link on the main page, and then left click the View Raw text link in the middle of the page that comes up.

Hi Dean,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did everything properly, downloading the files, modifying the .po file with Poedit, uploading on the server etc.

The untranslated elements show either on the admin interface (this is not a real problem insofar the clients do not see it) and on the main events page. For instance, the same string “Map and Directions” (translated in the .po file in all its occurences) shows translated on the individual event page, but on the events list page shows in English under the same event! I have attempted to modify the strings with the Quick Localisation plugin plugin (recommended on this forum), but this doesn’t work. Moreover, uploading the .mo file has given rise to other small issues, that I take up in a further thread.

Hey

OK, I see what you are saying. For some reason that string on the event lists is not translatable!

I will get a ticket raised, however it may be a good idea to modify the template (event_list.php) in the meantime to show the correct translation.

Line 343 says:

$google_map_link = espresso_google_map_link(array('address' => $event_address, 'city' => $event_city, 'state' => $event_state, 'zip' => $event_zip, 'country' => $event_country, 'text' => 'Map and Directions', 'type' => 'text'));

If there are more aspects please list them and I can look into them to see if these are missing translations or something different.
