Transactions marked as incomplete in EE, when completed in PayPal

We are currently experiencing an issue with EE where visitors are signing up for events, paying with credit card, and being charged via PayPal, but the transactions are being marked as incomplete on EE.

For example, on March 5th we had 12 people sign up for an event, and all of them were charged the $25 fee on PayPal. However, all of them show up as incomplete in Event Espresso, and as a result show 0 attendees registered.

As you can probably imagine, this is a pretty big pain, as we will have to go through each transaction, check to see if they were charged for real on PayPal or not, then adjust the entry in EE accordingly. This leaves a lot of room for error, and is a ton of work. In the next two months we are hosting 6 events with 200+ guests expected at each, so the sooner we can get this resolved the better.

Hi Mike,

When you set up your PayPal account, did you turn on the IPN (Instant Payment Notification)? Your website running Event Espresso needs to receive an IPN in order to know that someone has paid or not.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for the reply! I should mention that this error seems to be occurring sporadically…we’ve had several events already this year and payments have come through just fine. This is a recent issue with the latest events we’ve set up. And even then, we’re starting to see some go through fine, and some not. I can’t seem to figure out the pattern.

I believe our IPN settings are correct, but I will double check. Let me know if you know of any other potential bugs that you’re aware of in the meantime.

Hi there,

If you are on the very latest version of Event Espresso, there are no known issues with the PayPal IPN. That said, the PayPal IPN has multiple points of failure since there are so many things that can affect whether the IPN makes it back to your site. Since this is happening sporadically, there are two things you can check first:

1) Make sure that the registration and payment pages are not served as cached files.

2) If you haven’t already done so, we highly recommend setting up the simplified transactions page template for the transactions/notify URL page on your site. You can download this template here:
