Tooltips not working on EE3.1.37.17

A week or two ago we started noticing that the tooltips that appeared when you hover over an event were no longer appearing. Nothing was changed as far as we know. The same issue occurs on default themes like twenty twenty and twenty fourteen. Could it be a problem with the old versions of EE? How difficult will it be to upgrade to the latest?

Plugins
EE Version 3.1.37.17.P
EE calendar Version 2.2.8.p

Site is running on WordPress 5.5

Upon inspecting the console each time I try to hover over an event I get:

Hi there,

Something has changed, you’ve updated to WP5.5 🙂

Install and activate this plugin on the site:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/

Do the tooltips then work?

That worked perfectly, thank you.

You’re most welcome.

So, the above plugin basically adds in some ‘migrate’ functions for jQuery that allow older code to continue to run, eventually, that code will need to be updated or you’ll likely run into the same issue.

You asked how difficult it would be to upgrade to the latest version and for most users, it’s simply a case of de-activating EE3 and it’s add-ons, install EE4 (and it’s add-ons) then follow the onscreen instructions to migrate your data over into EE4 (that only happens on initial activation on EE4).

However, we do recommend creating a development copy of the site and running through the upgrade there first as sometimes, especially if any changes have been made to EE3 or in cases where users have ‘repurposed’ system questions (using the country question as a Date Of Birth question for example) you can run into issues.

So in short, upgrading generally isn’t too much of an issue, but EE4 works very differently to EE3 and if something strange has been done to your install of EE3 you can run into problems, so test migrating on a development copy first.
