Ticket/Event date oversold

I have one event with a referencing ticket which is oversold by one unit.

How could that have happened? Any way to find the cause? Any options to make it more secure that overbooking is not happening?

If you’re using an older version of Event Espresso 4, a version before the ticket reservation feature was added, that would be why. The newer versions of Event Espresso 4 have a ticket reservation system that prevents overselling. May I ask do you have the latest version of Event Espresso 4 installed or an older version?

I am currently on Version 4.9.23.p. Is that version before the ticket reservation system?

Parts of it yes. The ticket reservation system was rolled out over several updates and your version does not have the parts that show the number of reserved tickets and the parts that monitor datetime limits. The way forward will be to update to the current version.
