On https://ceyou.org/ we would like to display a left-aligned thumbnail embedded within the text of the excerpt for the events. We used to have a plugin that did this, but it stopped working. How can we do this in Event Espresso?

Are you referring to a Event Grid View? https://eventespresso.com/product/eea-events-grid-view-template/
Anyway, if you plan to show all events, then customize it using CSS, you can use this shortcode. [ESPRESSO_EVENTS css_class=my-custom-class] then just create a selector to hide the element that you do not need.
