Suggestions for collecting a deposit / partial payment

I understand the current version of EE (3.1.31.1) does not support partial payments, but I’m writing to ask if anyone could suggest a practical workaround that could make it  possible to collect a deposit then collect the remaining amount at a later date.  I’m hoping there’s some semi automated way to use EE’s tool set to at least make it easier than manually collecting the remaining amount from  the attendee.  Any suggestions?

Hi Chris,

Other members of the team might have an idea, but here is my general suggestion.

Create a ticket that is called something related to a “Deposit”. People can purchase a deposit ticket and pay that amount in full. After they pay that ticket, you can manually update their purchase with the amount they owe and send them an electronic invoice for them to finish their payment.

That way people who want to pay a smaller deposit now, and the remainder later can do so. And those who want to pay the full amount now can do that with the full-priced ticket option.

hi Garth,

thanks for the reply.  based on your suggestion, i’ll share how i’m setting these up in an effort to help others in the same boat.  it actually works quite well, but it needs a little work to be fool proof.

each new event has 2 prices – ‘deposit’ and ‘full’.  the attendee could pay in full and that would be the end of it or the attendee could pay partial / deposit.

when the admin needs to collect the full amount for those that paid a deposit he would navigate to attendee records for those that have a price option of ‘deposit’, update ‘price option’ to ‘full’, press the update record button, press the update price button then send the attendee a payment reminder via email.

the email contains a link for the attendee to pay the remaining amount.  the reminder email and the payment page are the items that need a little work.  it needs to be more clear in its messaging so the attendee know exactly how much they paid already and how much they owe. at present it only states the full amount.

questions:

01. is there a variable that can be included in the email and payment page that displays how much the attendee paid to date?

02. is there a variable that can be included in the email and payment page that displays how much the attendee owes?

Hi,

There is no variable to do those things by standard. However they are quite easy to add in.

This code is a replacement for the email.php and creates two new shortcodes, [amount_paid] and [amount_owed] which can be used in emails. https://gist.github.com/Apina/df5f6d490c1fb35c5b18

I have not extensively tested this so use at your own risk!

I will add a request to add these into future versions of event espresso but I cannot guarantee inclusion.

Note that modifying core files like this isnt generally recommended, so back up your files first, and note that updates to the plugin will over write the code.
