It depends on whether you’ll be accepting payments online through one of the payment options. If you’re using one of the on-site payment options like Auth.AIM, Stripe, or PayPal Pro, it’s required.
If you’re using one of the off-site Payment options like 2checkout, PayPal standard, and AuthAIM, it will work, but it’s highly recommend to force the payment return page to load in https. There’s a checkbox setting in the payment settings that will do this once you have an SSL cert installed.
If you’re only using one of the offline payment methods, like invoices, then an SSL cert isn’t required.
