Slow calendar / maxing out on db queries

Hi guys,

My calendar is super slow, taking about 15 seconds to load the events into it. I started counting when I changed to a month with events.

My calendar has 12 events, with a datetime each week. We are an art studio, with weekly classes.

Also, I’ve been locked out of my host quite a few times for too many queries. I believe they said the limit is 80,000/hr.

The site isn’t even live yet, I’m just having these problems while it’s being built.

Do you have any recommendations for this? I can give temp credentials, or take it out of maintenance mode temporarily for you to view.

Thanks,

Derek

Do you have any idea on what’s causing the 80,000 queries per hour? Unless you’re continually refreshing the calendar page that wouldn’t cause 80,000 queries per hour.

Two things that will help speed up the calendar load time is you go to Event Espresso > Calendar > Advanced Settings and set
Display Attendee Limits to No
and
Disable Categories? to No

The other thing that will help is you use a caching plugin like WP Super Cache so the Calendar page gets served from a cached file.

Great, thanks. I also removed the tooltips and that seemed to help.

I’m not sure about the queries. I did refresh a bunch of times as I was testing out designs, but was still surprised. I’ve had it happen 3 or 4 times now – I didn’t think my use was crazy.

Do you have an idea of how many queries there would be if there is 12 (weekly) events? I don’t want to be worried about multiple users, and may have to look at other hosting.

Thanks, Derek

Hi Derek,

The number of queries will vary depending on a number of factors, including: Your WordPress theme, the activated WordPress plugins, traffic, and site content.

You can get a better idea on which pages/requests do more queries by installing this plugin:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-monitor/

or for a simple report, you can use this:

http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-show-number-of-queries-and-page-load-time-in-wordpress/

Here’s an interesting article on how your chosen WordPress theme can affect the number of queries (and ultimately overall performance) :

Similarly, how plugins can affect the number of queries per request:
