Site mails regarded as spam – related to large amount HTML content?

I’ve found several topics on the support forum relating to the same problem: many of our EE mails end up in the spam boxes of our visitors. We’ve been trying several routes to improve this. We understand there is no silver bullet to this as spam filters take many factors into account to judge mails.

My technically more skilled co-administrator has also looked to the content of the EE mails. His suggestion is that a contributing factor can be that there is a large amount of HTML compared only a little content. We think that this increases the SPAM score of the message drastically.
For instance a simple
<h1>[COMPANY]</h1>
expands to
<h1 style=”margin: 0!important; padding: 0; font-family: ‘HelveticaNeue-Light’, ‘Helvetica Neue Light’, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, ‘Lucida Grande’, sans-serif; color: #000; line-height: 1.1; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 10px; font-size: 36px; font-weight: 200;”>Pluk de Liefde</h1>

Any suggestion to address this?

Regards,

Joost

Hello Joost,

I’m pretty sure that the amount of HTML and inline styles wouldn’t affect the spam score of an email.

What happens (most of the time) is that several recipients may have marked your emails as spam, or you haven’t set up an SPF record on your server.

Also, if you’re on a shared server, it’s very likely that the shared server’s IP address has been blacklisted because of someone else on the shared server was sending spam emails.

I would suggest using a transactional email service, such as Mandrill for sending emails, because they work with email companies to ensure their servers are not blacklisted. Also, if you use a service like Mandrill, you will get a reason why the messages are being blocked.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have further questions.
