Event Espresso General Settings says “There is an automatic update for Event Espresso available but your Site License Key has not been set.” โ€“ but elsewhere it says not to set this if on a development server. I am building this site locally (on a Mac) and will move to a production server (Windows Server 2008) before go-live. I want the updated version **during** development, not only when it’s ready to go live… What should I do?

Hi Robin,

You can add it to your dev platform for now. Just request that we reset your license key so we can associate your license key on the new domain. If needed we’ll assign you a different license key if there are issues.

Hi Robin,

We recommend not adding the license key to the development site because it can cause issues/conflicts when you add it to the live site. You can always download the files from your eventespresso.com account and install the plugin through the plugin area of your site.

The license key is for auto-updates, but you can install it manually on the dev site.

Does that help?

Probably the best way go about this is run a manual update:

Thanks for your responses, but now I’m confused as both answers seem contradictory. I have only downloaded the various plugin files from my account today, so would have thought they were already up-to-date: is this the case? Do I actually need to worry about the license key during development? Does the license key have any functional effect on the plugin(s)?

Hi Robin,

There really isn’t a conflict in our answers. We recommend only using the license on the live site so you won’t have to request a license reset. That’s all. ๐Ÿ™‚

You can do it either way. The license key does not have any functional effect on the plugin. The key is to allow for auto updates.
