REST API for Beginners

I am not a programmer but have a basic understanding, perhaps enough to make use of the REST API? Reading the documentation prior to integration into the core it seems that it would have been possible to use a shortcode [REST_API_CLIENT] and this would list the first 10 events and their descriptions. I will try and report back if this works, but is their a guide for beginners? I have implemented a a couple of hooks for other programs and got them working more by trail and error, but a guide on how to get a list of logged-in users usign a hook would be good?

While the REST API is recommended to be used as a tool for developers, I can recommend this guide to get familiar with the basics:
