Rendering Dates for multiple-day events

Most of my events will start on Friday at 6:00 and end on Sunday at 5:00. The text that is rendered for “Upcoming Date(s) and Time(s):” shows up as:
<month day, year> – <month> <day> <year>
<start time on first day> – <end time on last day>

This is very muddled. I want the text to say:
“Starts at <time> on <date>
Ends at <time> on <date>”

How do I accomplish this?

You can reformat how the dates are displayed by adding the following code to your functions plugin:
