Registrations listed as abandoned if payment is not complete

Hi,
Event is configured to default to payment pending.
If someone registers for an event but does not complete the payment, they would a couple ours receive an automated email reminding them of their payment pending. The registration would be set to payment pending and status as incomplete.

Now when people do not complete the payment on a registration, the status is always sent to abandoned. I have tried having the registration default to pending payment or to approved. in each case, the status goes to abandoned and a pending payment email does not get sent.

If I manually through bulk actions set the registration to approved, then again go set to payment pending and notify, it will show up as an incomplete registration.

What am I doing wrong?
